The band
Wulkany (
"The Volcanoes") was formed in 1964 at Secondary School No. IV in Nowa Huta.
It played mainly at school dance evenings.
Its programme consisted mostly of covers of well-known English bands,
especially their hits heard fresh on Radio Luxembourg.
Rehearsals were also held at the Tabakiera club
under the watchful eye of
the manager,
Zdzisław Synowiec, and the band used equipment
built by
Andrzej Radwan, which later became
the property of the Tobacco Works, where the Tabakiera club was located.
At the school's studniówka (pre-graduation ball) in 1965, besides
Wulkany,
the band
Popioły also played (the band's first line-up, in which
among others
Radek Ratyński, Zbyszek Sałata, Zenek Rybarczyk started playing.
It was made up essentially of pupils of this school, but played mostly at the Korczak Youth Culture Centre (MDK), also
known as the Scouts' House) .
That line-up was the forerunner of the
Popioły re-formed by
Radek Ratyński in 1967, after the break-up of
Ryszardy. Interestingly, School No. IV produced many
later musicians:
Konrad Ratyński, as well as the later singer of
Ryszardy -
Joanna Makiej, and later
Jola i Roma Doniec.
After the band members' final school exams in 1965,
Wulkany and
Popioły were disbanded.
