A band called "Czerwone Tarcze" ("The Red Badges") / a reference to the shield-shaped school badges that secondary school pupils had to wear on the left sleeve - ours had a lightning bolt - and also to the name of the band "Czerwone Gitary" / was active at the Telecommunications Technical School, located at that time on Łobzowska Street in Kraków.
The band existed in the years 1964/65/66, originally under the name "Czarty", which we changed in 1965 when the school took us under its wing. At first rehearsals were held in private flats.
Our first, timid attempts at rock meant playing ordinary acoustic guitars - "boxes" - fitted with factory-made pickups. "Stolica" and "Domino" radio sets served as our amplifiers. The "Domino" radio acted as a preamplifier, and its "extra loudspeaker" socket was connected to the "record player" input of the "Stolica" set. The distortion was enormous, but in this way we got a surprisingly powerful sound.
That was 1964 and we were trying to play in the line-up: Marek Szerszeń - guitar, Wiesław Bujnowicz /now deceased/ - guitar, Marek Żarnowski - lead guitar and Franciszek Trynka - drums. For a short time we played in the line-up: Ryszard Tysowski guitar, Marek Żarnowski - lead guitar and Zdzisław Beniuk - drums.

In 1965 the school took an interest in our playing and we got both a rehearsal room and equipment. The electronics workshop put amplifiers, speaker cabinets and microphones at our disposal. Playing at that time / 1965/66/ were: Andrzej Lebiedowicz / sadly also no longer with us/ - organ, Marek Żarnowski - a lead guitar he had built himself, Zbigniew Kawalec - chord guitar and Ryszard Tysowski - bass guitar. In this line-up the band lasted until 1966.
It is hard not to mention Mr Vogler - a teacher, electronics engineer and musician, who watched over all the pieces we performed, and also, or perhaps above all, the late lamented form teacher of our "radio" class - the engineer Jan Dobesz - a great friend of young people and the good spirit of our band.
At that time we played the English songs known today as the "British Invasion", as well as tunes by "Czerwone Gitary".
Outside the Telecommunications Technical School we performed at the Henryk Jordan House of Culture.
