The band Signum was founded in spring 1969 by Adam Haracz and Jan Obartuch.
Rehearsals, dance evenings and beat masses took place at the Cistercian basilica in Mogiła, Nowa Huta. The band played and sang its own songs as well as the rock and pop hits of the day.
The Beat Mass by Katarzyna Gaertner was first performed on a Sunday in December, at 9.00 a.m.
Besides the dance evenings for young people held in the rooms behind the basilica, the band also played at school dances in Nowa Huta. The musical equipment was bought by the priests.
At that time the beat masses brought many young people back to the church. In a socialist country this form of music had many opponents. The rehearsal room was broken into and the musical equipment was stolen.
A few months later, after playing a few more events on borrowed equipment, the band broke up. By then it was autumn 1971.
All the band members except Leszek Kosmala came from the Szkolne estate.
